German Shepherd Puppy Training Tips

Making sure that your puppy is toilet trained as young as possible can really help create a happy home. Let’s be honest, who wants to run around after a puppy for months wiping up messes and worrying about your carpet. The sooner you can train your puppy properly the better it is for everyone, including your puppy! One fantastic tip to remember is that puppies are like babies. The concept and ideas behind potty training a puppy are not all that different.

Your puppy will respond well to structure more than anything. So try and feed them and walk them at the same times each day. This can be hard for lots of us that have busy lives however and stick to the same times each day as much as possible, as this is the quickest way that your puppy will learn.

Every time you feed your puppy you should take them to go to the toilet immediately afterwards and then again in about 30-45minutes . Once you have done this a few times your puppy will start expecting it and soon enough they will be taking themselves to go outside to the toilet without any prompting from you at all.

Remember that young puppies have smaller bladders so will need to go to the toilet more often. Also try and get them to go to the toilet as soon as they wake up and just before they go to bed.

Your puppy will pick up on this schedule very quickly and will become used to the times they are supposed to go outside and wee.  Don’t forget that your puppy will probably not last the whole night until they are much older. Don’t let this put you off toilet training in the day, they will soon start to last the whole night as soon as their bladders are big enough.

It is important to not make your puppy scared of going to the toilet, which punishments can cause. You will soon start to spot signs that your puppy is about to go to the toilet. Once you spot this use a firm, sharp voice shouting “No” to make them stop. Once they have stopped use a happier voice to ask them if they want to go outside and then lead them to the potty spot in the yard and praise them heavily once they do their business.

Puppies will respond to praise far better than the do punishment, so remember to praise anytime’s they take themselves out for a wee or show any signs that the training schedule is working.
