House Training A Puppy:
House Training A Puppy for you and your family is important to get right. After all it is no different to raising a toddler, if you don’t nip problems in the bud in the early stages they will carry on into later life.
Whilst you can put up
with the odd accident from your puppy whilst they are learning I am
sure this is not something that you want to put up with their whole
life.
The first thing you need to do is designate an area in your yard
for your puppy to use a toilet. Every time you let them out to go to
the toilet you should guide them to that area so that they are in
the habit of using it. Your puppy will probably prefer to find a
quiet, discreet area in your home to do their business.
Often this
is behind the sofa or under the bed. Once you have discovered this
area you should keep an eye on your puppy for when they approach
this area as this probably indicates that they need the toilet. So
as soon as you see them heading there, pick them up and take them to
their toile area in the garden.
One of the biggest hints you can be given when
potty training a puppy
is to praise not punish. Your puppy will be easily confused and if
you shout at them after they have gone to the toilet in the wrong
place this will just make your puppy afraid to wee. Instead when
your puppy goes to the special place in your yard on their own accord you should
praise your puppy so they know they have done the right thing.
Remember that this is not a smooth, fool proof process and you will
have accidents. At night especially your puppy is unlikely to be
able to last that amount of time without needing the toilet. It
especially important to take your puppy out right before bed and
right after he wakes up. You should also expect to have to get up at
least once per night in the early stages of his life. Other times
it's also important to take him out is right after he eats, right
after he drinks, and any time he whines near the door outside.
However with just a little perseverance you and your puppy will get
through the accident stages and get to a point where your puppy is
100% potty trained. When you get through this phase you'll
have accomplished House Training A Puppy!
